94-Year-Old Driver Killed in Broadside Crash on Sonoma Boulevard in Vallejo

A 94-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning when the pickup truck he was driving was broadsided on Sonoma Boulevard in Vallejo, according to the Vallejo Police Department.

The crash happened at about 8:15 a.m. on October 6 at Sonoma Boulevard and Solano Avenue. Police said a Ford pickup truck was making an illegal U-turn when it was struck broadside by a Honda Accord. The pickup’s driver, identified as George Supica, 94, died. The driver of the Honda was injured, police said. The extent of those injuries has not been released.

Vallejo police said the crash was not related to two shootings reported elsewhere in the city that same morning. The collision remains under investigation.

Why U-Turn and Broadside Crashes Are So Dangerous

A broadside, or T-bone, collision puts the full force of the striking vehicle into the side of the other car, where there is far less crumple zone between the occupants and the impact. Older drivers and passengers are especially vulnerable to serious injury in side-impact crashes.

U-turns on busy multi-lane roads like Sonoma Boulevard require a driver to judge the speed and distance of oncoming traffic, sometimes across several lanes. California Vehicle Code sections 22100.5 through 22105 restrict where U-turns are allowed, including at many intersections and in business districts. Investigators typically look at signals, sight lines, vehicle speeds, and whether each driver had the right of way before reaching any conclusion about fault.

What Injured Drivers and Families Should Know

In California, fault can be shared between drivers, and each driver’s percentage of responsibility affects any recovery. Anyone hurt in a crash like this one should get medical care right away, keep records of treatment and lost time from work, and be careful about giving a recorded statement to an insurance company before understanding their rights.

When a crash causes a death, surviving family members may have legal options as well. California generally allows two years to file a personal injury or wrongful-death claim, though some cases involve shorter deadlines, especially when a public agency is involved.
