What the CHP Reported

The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 4:56 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2026, on Kasson Road north of Linne Road near Tracy. Four vehicles were involved: a Toyota, a 1994 Honda, a motorcycle, and a Peterbilt tractor-trailer.

According to the CHP's preliminary account, the Toyota was northbound behind the Peterbilt when its driver entered the southbound lanes to pass without enough clearance. A southbound motorcyclist moved onto the west shoulder to avoid the Toyota. The Toyota struck the Honda, which was behind the motorcycle, head-on and pushed the Honda into the motorcycle. The Toyota then struck the Peterbilt and overturned.

The Honda driver, a 22-year-old Tracy man, died at the scene. The Toyota driver, a 43-year-old Tracy man, was taken to a hospital with major injuries and later arrested. KCRA and FOX40 both reported that the CHP suspects alcohol was a factor. The investigation remains open, and an arrest is not a conviction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens after a suspected DUI crash causes a death?
Law enforcement may pursue a criminal case, while the family may separately have a civil wrongful death claim. The two processes have different purposes.
Can more than one insurance policy apply in a four-vehicle crash?
Yes. Coverage may exist under several vehicle policies, and underinsured motorist coverage may also matter.
What evidence matters in a suspected DUI crash?
The CHP report, chemical test results, witness statements, vehicle data, scene evidence, and medical records can all be important.
Does an arrest prove civil liability?
No. An arrest is not a conviction, and civil responsibility still depends on the evidence, though the underlying conduct can be highly relevant.
