What Happened

On April 6, 2025, California Highway Patrol officers responded to a serious two-vehicle collision on Highway 1 near the Mar Monte Avenue on-ramp in Santa Cruz. A 21-year-old man at the wheel of a gray Lexus had been traveling along the highway when, in circumstances under active investigation, he struck a silver Ford Fusion driven by a 70-year-old resident of Watsonville.

The force of the impact caused the Ford Fusion to overturn, coming to rest in the area between Highway 1’s right lane and the Mar Monte Avenue on-ramp. Emergency responders arrived quickly and assessed the 70-year-old driver, who was found to have sustained major injuries. Given the severity of her condition, she was airlifted from the scene to a nearby hospital for immediate trauma care. The Lexus driver sustained only minor injuries in comparison.

Officers conducted an investigation at the scene and determined that the young driver’s behavior behind the wheel constituted reckless driving. He was arrested and booked on charges of felony reckless driving under California Vehicle Code Section 23103. The criminal investigation continued as CHP officers worked to establish the full circumstances of the crash, including the Lexus driver’s speed and conduct immediately prior to the collision.
