What Happened
Just after 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2023, the intersection of North Livermore Avenue and the I-580 westbound on-ramp in Livermore became the scene of a deadly collision. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2006 Acura RL was traveling southbound on North Livermore Avenue at a dangerously high rate of speed when its driver failed to stop for a red signal and blew through the intersection.
At that same moment, two vehicles in the northbound left-turn lane were lawfully advancing on a green light: a 2013 Hyundai Elantra and a 1994 Chevrolet Camaro. The speeding Acura struck both turning vehicles with tremendous force. After the impacts, the Acura continued into the intersection and struck a traffic signal pole. The collision was catastrophic โ the pole entered the driver compartment of the Acura, fatally injuring the driver. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau subsequently identified him as a Livermore man.
Occupants of both the Hyundai Elantra and the Chevrolet Camaro were examined by paramedics at the scene. All declined transport to a hospital, suggesting they escaped the violent collision with relatively minor physical injuries. The intersection โ a busy gateway between North Livermore Avenue and the I-580 freeway on-ramp โ was closed for an extended period as CHP-Dublin officers processed the scene and gathered evidence.
In the hour preceding the crash, CHP had received reports of drag racing activity on roadways north of the intersection. Officers were already in the area responding to those calls. However, CHP investigators stated that it had not been confirmed whether racing activity was directly connected to the fatal collision. The investigation remains open, and the precise cause of the Acura’s extreme speed has not been officially established. Anyone with information about the crash or any racing activity that evening is encouraged to contact the CHP-Dublin Area office.
