The Fatal Crash

The California Highway Patrol said the first crash happened around 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, on eastbound Interstate 80 west of Air Base Parkway in Fairfield. A 19-year-old San Pablo man driving a 2007 Honda Civic lost control for an unknown reason, and the Civic was struck by a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a 47-year-old Sacramento man.

The Honda driver was taken to a hospital, where he died. His name had not been released. The CHP said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the first crash.

Tesla Struck a CHP Patrol Car at the Scene

About an hour later, at 11:46 p.m., four CHP officers were still investigating with four lanes closed and traffic directed into the slow lane. A Tesla driven by a 22-year-old Sacramento man went through the flare and cone pattern and hit a CHP Dodge Charger with two officers inside.

Both officers were taken to a Fairfield hospital. CBS Sacramento reported that they were later released. The East Bay Times reported that the impact pushed the patrol vehicle into the front of a tow truck. CHP had not determined whether the Tesla's Full Self-Driving feature was active.

CBS Sacramento and the East Bay Times reported the same sequence from the CHP. The investigation into both crashes remains open, and this article does not assign fault beyond describing the agency's preliminary account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can two crashes at the same scene lead to separate claims?
Yes. The fatal crash and the later collision involving the patrol car may involve different drivers, injuries, evidence, and insurance coverage.
What electronic evidence can matter in a Tesla crash?
Vehicle event data, driver-assistance system records, camera data, and phone records may be relevant, depending on what investigators preserve and obtain.
Does driving through flares automatically decide fault?
It is important evidence, but responsibility still depends on the complete investigation, including visibility, warnings, speed, driver attention, and vehicle data.
What evidence should be preserved?
The involved vehicles, tow truck video, CHP reports and scene photographs, electronic vehicle data, witness statements, and medical records should be identified early.
