Incident Area

A 20-year-old woman died early Sunday after she was struck by two vehicles on eastbound Highway 4 just east of Contra Loma Boulevard in Antioch, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers responded at about 2:31 a.m. on October 4. According to the CHP's preliminary investigation, the woman had been riding as a passenger in a vehicle on eastbound Highway 4 when an item was lost onto the freeway. The vehicle pulled over in the center median, and the woman got out and walked into the traffic lanes to retrieve the item. She was struck by two vehicles and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both drivers stopped and cooperated with investigators, the CHP said. Officers said they do not suspect alcohol or drug impairment as a factor at this time. All eastbound lanes near Contra Loma Boulevard were closed from about 2:49 a.m. to 5:27 a.m., and Antioch police advised that the eastbound on-ramp at Contra Loma Boulevard would stay closed for an extended period.

The woman's name had not been released as of October 5. The crash remains under investigation.

Why Freeway Pedestrian Crashes Need a Careful Investigation

Pedestrian crashes on a freeway often happen at night, at high speed, and with little time for drivers to react. Investigators may look at lighting, visibility, vehicle speeds, lane positions, where the stopped vehicle was parked, and the sequence of impacts when more than one vehicle is involved. Highway 4 through Antioch is also a busy freight route, and our Antioch truck accident lawyer page explains how claims differ when a commercial vehicle is involved.

Evidence such as Caltrans traffic camera footage, dashcam video, vehicle data, and witness statements can be lost quickly if it is not requested early. No conclusion about fault should be drawn from the limited information released so far.

Questions Families May Face After a Fatal Highway 4 Crash

After a death on the freeway, families often have questions about what happened and whether any insurance coverage may apply. The answers depend on facts the investigation is still developing, including the role of each vehicle involved.

California generally allows two years to bring a wrongful-death claim, though some cases involve shorter deadlines. Families should get case-specific guidance rather than relying on a general rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a California wrongful death claim usually allow?
Most California wrongful death lawsuits generally must be filed within two years. A government claim may need to be presented within about six months when a public entity could be involved.
What evidence matters after a pedestrian collision?
Lighting, visibility, vehicle speed, traffic controls, witness accounts, roadway evidence, surveillance video, and vehicle data can all matter. Video should be requested before it is overwritten.
Does crossing outside a marked crosswalk automatically decide fault?
No. The full circumstances still matter, and California comparative fault rules can divide responsibility based on the evidence.
Can a family pursue a claim while police are still investigating?
A family can preserve evidence and investigate insurance while the police work continues. Whether a viable claim exists depends on the facts and legal responsibility.
