Two Children on Bicycles Were Struck
San Mateo County sheriff's deputies were called at about 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, to a crash near Grandview Boulevard and Golden Gate Avenue in Half Moon Bay. Investigators said a vehicle struck two 6-year-olds who were riding their bicycles, and the driver then left the scene.
Both children suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital. The Sheriff's Office said they were in stable condition. Their names have not been released.
A Witness and a Drone Helped Find the Driver
A witness who saw the crash gave deputies a description of the vehicle and the driver. After a search of the area, deputies found the vehicle. With help from the Daly City Police Department's drone unit, they located the suspect hiding in a wooded area south of Bancroft Avenue.
The Sheriff's Office identified him as Robert Schumann, 37, of San Francisco. Investigators said he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, and that he was driving on a license suspended because of a prior DUI conviction.
What He Was Booked On
Schumann was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of driving under the influence causing bodily injury, hit-and-run resulting in injury, driving with a license suspended for a DUI conviction, and driving with a blood alcohol level over .01 while on probation. These are allegations. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The Sheriff's Office asked anyone with information about the crash to contact the department.
What Families Should Know
When a driver hits a child and leaves, the family is often dealing with hospital stays and long recovery at the same time as insurance questions. In California, an injured child may have a claim against the driver's insurance and, depending on the family's own auto policy, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage. A criminal case and a civil injury claim are separate, and the civil claim does not have to wait for the criminal case to end.
This article does not make any finding about fault. The case remains under investigation.
We hope both children make a full recovery.
