Incident Area

A 21-year-old Sacramento woman was killed and two people were injured in a head-on crash on State Route 160 north of Antioch early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at about 5:30 a.m. on September 27 near Sherman Island Cross Road, south of Rio Vista. CHP said a black Kia Forte was traveling north when it crossed into the southbound lanes and entered the path of a white Ford F-250 pickup truck. KCRA reported that the pickup was hauling equipment.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office identified the Kia driver as Ajani Leona Everhart. She was alone in the car and died from her injuries. The driver and passenger in the pickup were taken to a hospital. Authorities had not released their conditions.

State Route 160 was closed at Sherman Island Cross Road for several hours. CHP said investigators had not determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role. The cause remains under investigation.

How Head-On Crashes Are Investigated

Investigators in a cross-centerline crash typically document tire marks, debris, vehicle resting positions, roadway geometry, visibility, and any available surveillance or dash camera video. Event data recorders may provide information about speed, braking, and steering immediately before impact. CHP has not released a finding explaining why the Kia crossed into the opposing lane.

The reported lane crossing describes the vehicles' movements, but it does not by itself establish why the Kia entered the opposing lane. Anyone injured in a serious collision can consult an Antioch car accident lawyer to preserve evidence and identify available insurance while CHP completes its investigation. Families in Antioch and East County can also reach our Antioch injury team with questions about other kinds of injuries.

Claims Available to Injured Occupants and Families

The two people in the pickup may be able to seek compensation from any party ultimately found responsible for the crash. Recoverable losses can include medical care, lost income, rehabilitation, and pain and suffering. Insurance coverage, vehicle ownership, and the final investigative findings can all affect a claim.

Everhart's eligible relatives may have a wrongful-death claim if the evidence establishes legal responsibility by another person or entity. An Antioch wrongful death lawyer can explain who may file, what losses California law recognizes, and which deadlines apply. Families and injured occupants should keep medical records, insurance correspondence, photographs, and proof of financial losses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do California injury and wrongful death claims usually allow?
Most California personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits generally must be filed within two years. A claim involving a government agency may need to be presented within about six months, so families should get case-specific advice promptly.
What evidence should be preserved after a fatal crash?
Photographs, video, witness information, police records, vehicle data, medical and funeral records, insurance correspondence, and proof of financial losses can all matter. Some video and electronic records may be overwritten quickly.
Can fault be shared in a California collision?
Yes. California uses comparative fault, so responsibility can be divided among multiple people or entities based on the evidence.
Does a police investigation decide a civil claim?
No. Police findings can be important evidence, but insurance and civil claims are evaluated separately under civil law.
