What San Jose Police Reported
San Jose police said the collision happened at about 6:15 a.m. on Friday, September 25, 2026, at East Capitol Expressway and Ocala Avenue. A white 2017 Ford F-350 pickup was traveling northbound on Capitol Expressway through the intersection on a green light when it struck a woman riding a bicycle eastbound on Ocala Avenue, according to the department's preliminary investigation. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The call first came in as a hit-and-run. Police later made contact with the driver, who they said pulled off to exit the expressway safely and then cooperated with officers. Police said drugs or alcohol did not appear to be factors. The woman's name was withheld pending notification of her family.
It was San Jose's 37th fatal collision and 37th traffic death of 2026. Anyone with information was asked to contact Detective DelliCarpini at 408-277-4654. CBS San Francisco, KRON4, and KTVU reported on the crash.
Capitol Expressway and Bicycle Safety
Capitol Expressway is a wide, fast corridor through East San Jose, and cyclists crossing it at side streets like Ocala Avenue face long crossing distances and high-speed traffic, especially in early-morning darkness. This article does not assign blame. The signal timing, lighting, visibility, and each person's actions are questions for the San Jose Police Department's investigation.
What the Family Should Know
Even when early reports describe one side as having a green light, a full investigation looks at speed, lighting, visibility, and the driver's attention, and those details can affect a wrongful death claim. California's comparative fault rule means a family may still recover even if the person who died is found partly at fault. Families may also have coverage through their own auto policies.
