Deputy Chief Aaron McAlister of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District expressed concern about the dangers faced by firefighters on highways, stating that they are more hazardous than interior firefighting. The NHTSA is currently investigating how Tesla’s Autopilot system detects and responds to emergency vehicles parked on highways. At least 15 Teslas using the system have crashed into emergency vehicles across the nation.
The Tesla Model S involved in the accident was part of a recall of nearly 363,000 vehicles due to potential flaws in the “Full Self-Driving” feature. Despite the name, Tesla has stated that both Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems are advanced driver assist systems, requiring human drivers to be prepared to intervene at all times.
