What Happened

In the early morning darkness of June 27, 2025, a catastrophic multi-vehicle crash at the I-80/I-580 interchange in Albany claimed the life of a 40-year-old Oakland man. According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 3:45 AM near Buchanan Street, when a Toyota Camry operated by a man in his 30s was speeding and driving recklessly in the area of the freeway split.

The Camry struck the Hyundai driven by Daniel Morales in a violent head-on collision. The force of the impact was so severe that Morales’ Hyundai was launched off the overpass, landing upside-down on Buchanan Street below. Daniel Morales was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency personnel. A big rig was also involved in the multi-vehicle pileup, though no additional injuries were reported among the other drivers.

CHP officers and Albany Fire Department units arrived rapidly and secured the scene. The driver of the Toyota Camry was taken into custody and arrested on multiple felony charges, including driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter. The crash caused major traffic disruption in the area during the investigation and cleanup.

CHP investigators are continuing to review traffic camera footage, black box data from the vehicles involved, and accounts from eyewitnesses. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact the CHP Alameda office. The Morales family now faces the devastating reality of losing a loved one to another driver’s reckless and allegedly impaired decision-making behind the wheel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can file a wrongful death claim after a fatal car accident in California?
Under California Code of Civil Procedure Section 377.60, a wrongful death claim may be filed by the surviving spouse or domestic partner, the deceased’s children, or other dependents. If the victim left no spouse or children, the claim may extend to other family members who depended on the deceased for financial support.
What role does a DUI arrest play in a wrongful death civil case?
A DUI arrest strengthens a wrongful death civil claim significantly. Evidence of impairment โ€” blood alcohol results, field sobriety tests, and the arrest itself โ€” can be introduced in civil court to establish negligence per se. It may also support a claim for punitive damages under California Civil Code Section 3294, which can substantially increase the award.
How long do families have to file a wrongful death lawsuit in California?
California’s statute of limitations for wrongful death claims is two years from the date of the victim’s death (California Code of Civil Procedure Section 335.1). Missing this deadline typically bars the family from pursuing compensation, which is why early consultation with an attorney is critical.
What damages can a wrongful death family recover in California?
Surviving family members may recover economic damages such as lost financial support, funeral and burial costs, and medical expenses incurred before death. They may also recover non-economic damages for the loss of companionship, guidance, and emotional support. In DUI-related crashes, punitive damages may also be available to punish the at-fault driver’s egregious conduct.
