Crash Location

What Happened

On the evening of Tuesday, February 17, 2026, emergency personnel from the Sonoma Police Department, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, and the Sonoma Valley Fire Department responded at approximately 6:56 p.m. to the 600 block of Broadway — near the intersections of Maple and Patten Streets, close to the Sonoma Post Office — following reports of a vehicle striking two pedestrians.

Responding officers located a 73-year-old woman suffering from life-threatening injuries. Despite life-saving measures performed at the scene by Sonoma Valley Fire and EMS, she was pronounced dead at the scene. A second pedestrian, a 74-year-old woman, was located nearby with serious injuries. Emergency crews transported her to a regional trauma hospital, where she remained in critical but stable condition at the time of this report.

According to Sonoma Police, the two women were crossing Broadway between Napa and South MacArthur Streets but were not in a marked crosswalk when the northbound vehicle struck them. Their spouses, who had been walking behind them, were unharmed. Police stated that both women were visiting Sonoma from out of state. Broadway remained closed for approximately four hours while investigators processed the scene.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Sonoma Police stated that at this stage of the investigation, alcohol, drugs, and vehicle speed do not appear to have been contributing factors. The identity of the deceased was withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Sonoma County Coroner's Office. The investigation remains ongoing.

Two Separate Claims — Wrongful Death and Personal Injury

This crash gives rise to two distinct legal claims. The family of the woman who was killed may pursue a demanda por muerte injusta against the driver in California civil court. Separately, the woman who survived but was critically injured has her own demanda por lesiones personales for her medical expenses, ongoing care, pain and suffering, and diminished quality of life. Both claims can proceed at the same time and are independent of one another.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Can the family of the woman killed file a wrongful death claim even though she was crossing outside a crosswalk?
Yes. Under California's pure comparative negligence system, a family can still recover wrongful death damages even if the victim shared some fault — such as crossing outside a marked crosswalk. Any percentage of fault attributed to the pedestrian reduces the total recovery but does not bar the claim. The driver on Broadway had an independent duty to remain alert for pedestrians and to avoid striking them regardless of where they were crossing.
Can the critically injured survivor also file a personal injury claim?
Yes. The 74-year-old woman who was transported to a trauma hospital with serious injuries has her own independent personal injury claim. She can seek compensation for her medical bills, future care, pain and suffering, and loss of quality of life — separate from any wrongful death claim filed on behalf of the woman who was killed. Both claims can proceed simultaneously.
¿Quién puede presentar una demanda por muerte por negligencia en California?
California law allows the deceased's spouse or domestic partner, children, and grandchildren to file a wrongful death claim. If none of those parties exist, others who would inherit under California's intestate succession laws — including parents or siblings — may also file. The general deadline is two years from the date of death. Given that the family is out of state, consulting with a California attorney promptly is especially important to protect the claim.
Does it matter that the victims were out-of-state visitors?
No. California law protects anyone injured or killed in the state, regardless of where they live. The family of the deceased and the survivor can both pursue their claims in California courts even as out-of-state residents. An experienced California personal injury attorney can manage the entire legal process on their behalf, including all local filings, investigation, and negotiations with the driver's insurance company.
