Investigators said a vehicle struck two 6-year-olds who were riding their bicycles, and the driver then left the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Both children suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital. The Sheriff's Office said they were in stable condition. Their names have not been released.<\/p>\n<h2>A Witness and a Drone Helped Find the Driver<\/h2>\n<p>A witness who saw the crash gave deputies a description of the vehicle and the driver. After a search of the area, deputies found the vehicle. With help from the Daly City Police Department's drone unit, they located the suspect hiding in a wooded area south of Bancroft Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>The Sheriff's Office identified him as Robert Schumann, 37, of San Francisco. Investigators said he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, and that he was driving on a license suspended because of a prior DUI conviction.<\/p>\n<h2>What He Was Booked On<\/h2>\n<p>Schumann was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of driving under the influence causing bodily injury, hit-and-run resulting in injury, driving with a license suspended for a DUI conviction, and driving with a blood alcohol level over .01 while on probation. These are allegations. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.<\/p>\n<p>The Sheriff's Office asked anyone with information about the crash to contact the department.<\/p>\n<h2>What Families Should Know<\/h2>\n<p>When a driver hits a child and leaves, the family is often dealing with hospital stays and long recovery at the same time as insurance questions. In California, an injured child may have a claim against the driver's insurance and, depending on the family's own auto policy, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage. A criminal case and a civil injury claim are separate, and the civil claim does not have to wait for the criminal case to end.<\/p>\n<p>This article does not make any finding about fault.
